Abhishek's Biography

Abhishek Bachchan (Hindi: अभिषेक बच्चन, born 5 February 1976 in Mumbai, Maharashtra, India) is an award-winning Indian actor. He is the son of Indian actors Amitabh Bachchan and Jaya Bachchan. His wife is former Miss World turned actress Aishwarya Rai.
Bachchan made his debut with J.P. Dutta's Refugee (2000). After that, his career consisted of films that went un-noticed at the box office. It was not until 2004, that the actor delivered a hit and a critically acclaimed performance, in the films Dhoom and Yuva. His performance in the latter was praised for which he received his first Filmfare Award in the Best Supporting Actor category as well as many other awards. Since then, Bachchan has starred in films that have been commercially and critically successful and has established himself as one of the leading actors of the industry.
Early life
Abhishek Bachchan is the son of Bollywood superstar Amitabh Bachchan and actress turned politician Jaya Bhaduri, his elder sister is Shweta Bachchan-Nanda (b. 1974). His grandfather, Harivansh Rai Bachchan, was a well-known poet of Urdu and Hindi literature. The original last name of Abhishek's parental family is Srivastav, Bachchan being the pen name used by his grandfather. However, when his father Amitabh entered films, he did so under his father's pen name. He is of Punjabi Sikh heritage from his grandmother Teji's side, while also of Bengali Kulin Brahmin descent from his mother Jaya Bhaduri's side.
Abhishek was dyslexic as a child which he overcame.[1] He attended Jamnabai Narsee School and Bombay Scottish School in Mumbai, Modern School in Vasant Vihar, New Delhi, and Aiglon College in Switzerland. He then went to the U.S. to complete his education at Boston University but then left the course mid-way to pursue his acting career when his father's company ABCL was facing trouble.

[edit] Career
Abhishek began his career with J.P. Dutta's moderately successful Refugee along with Kareena Kapoor in 2000, but Kareena was the one, who got the succes. [2] In a span of four years, Bachchan went on to do many more movies, without any major box-office successes, for example Kuch Naa Kaho with his later wife Aishwarya Rai.
2004 was a good year for him. His performance in Mani Ratnam's Yuva, proved his mettle as an actor.[3] The same year, he starred in Dhoom which was his first major hit.[4] In 2005, he shot to fame with four consecutive hits: Bunty Aur Babli, Sarkar, Dus and Bluffmaster.[5] He won his second Filmfare Award in the Best Supporting Actor category for Sarkar. Bachchan also received his first Filmfare nomination in the Best Actor category.
His first 2006 release, the multi-starrer Kabhi Alvida Naa Kehna (2006) was one of the highest grossing films of the year.[6] He was also a part of Mani Ratnam's stage show, Netru, Indru, Naalai alongside many other co-stars. His first release in 2007 was Guru. He received much acclaim for his performance and the film emerged as his first solo hit.[7] His second release Umrao Jaan failed to do well at the box office, and there were rumours about him and Aishwarya Rai being together. His third release Dhoom 2, a sequel to his first hit Dhoom did very well at the box office, but like in the first film, the villain (this time Hrithik Roshan), stole the show from him. [8]
In May 2007, he made a brief appearance in the multi-starrer Shootout at Lokhandwala which was successful.[9] His next release Jhoom Barabar Jhoom released in June 2007. The film failed to do well in India[10] but did better overseas especially in the U.K.[11] However while the film received mixed reviews, Bachchan received good reviews for his performance in the film.[12][13][14][15][16]
Abhishek Bachchan is also involved in the functional and administrative operations of his father's company (formerly known as ABCL, now re-christened as AB Corp. Ltd.). It is known that during the times wherein his father was facing his worst phase with their company ABCL, which was declared a failed company, is when Abhishek got hugely involved in its revival.
In Summer 2008, Abhishek Bachchan will join his father Amitabh Bachchan and other leading entertainers from Hindi cinema on the world-wide The Unforgettables. The tour will reportedly cover numerous countries and continents over a two month period. Amitabh's company AB Corp Ltd. along with Wizcraft International Entertainment Pvt. Ltd are putting the concert together.[17]

[edit] Personal life

Bachchan with wife Aishwarya Rai Bachchan at the IIFA Awards (2007).
Abhishek Bachchan was earlier engaged to Karisma Kapoor. The couple announced their engagement on Amitabh Bachchan's 60th birthday celebration in October 2002.[18] The engagement was called off in January 2003.[19] Gossip columnists have linked Bachchan to many industry figures, but he strongly denied any rumours of romance.
After much speculation concerning their relationship, his engagement to Aishwarya Rai was announced on January 14, 2007. The announcement was later confirmed by Amitabh Bachchan.[20] Bachchan married Rai on April 20, 2007 according to traditional Hindu rites of the South Indian Bunt community, to which his wife belongs. Token North Indian and Bengali ceremonies were also performed. The wedding took place in a private ceremony at the Bachchan residence Prateeksha in Juhu, Mumbai. Though the wedding was a private affair intended for the Bachchan and Rai family and friends, the involvement of the media made it a national extravaganza.
Bachchan's paternal grandmother Teji Bachchan passed away on December 21, 2007.[21]

Rani and controversy

Rani Mukherjee to Marry Aditya Chopra
Bollywood star Rani Mukherjee and producer-director Aditya Chopra had a quiet engagement on Monday and are said to be getting married soon.
According to sources, the roka took place at the Chopra bungalow where the Sridevi starrer ‘Chandini’ was shot.
It is also reported that about 60 people were present at the ceremony including Rani Mukherjee’s parents, brother and his wife.
Aditya Chopra’s brother Uday Chopra , dad Yash Chopra and mom Pamela Chopra were also present.
Among others who attended the ceremony were Jugal Hansraj (Uday’s close friend), Anupam Kher and Kiron Kher .
Rani Mukherjee wore a maroon sari with silver embroidery and Aditya wore a kurta-pyjama, both designed by Pallavi Jaikishan. Speculations are that another function will be held at Rani’s residence sometime next week.
36-year old Aditya recently divorced his ex-wife, Payal Chopra. The couple got married in 2001. Sources claim that Aditya’s mom Pam Chopra is not too happy about Rani and her son’s engagement because she has a soft corner for Payal.
Also buzz is that after marriage Rani is not going to live in the Chopra house. Instead Aditya will live in the house Rani has recently bought.
No date has been set for the wedding, since Aditya is in the middle of a divorce from Payal.
The rumour mills say that Aditya’s family is unhappy about Aditya’s decision. Tabloids also say that Yash Chopra had threatened to disinherit Aditya from the Rs 1,000 crore Yashraj Films empire if he does marry Rani.
It’s believed that Aditya and Rani have been seeing each other for two years, and that Aditya took to Rani after working with her on his home production Saathiya .
Aditya subsequently cast Rani in many films produced under the Yashraj banner, including Mujhse Dosti Karoge , Hum Tum , Veer Zaara , Bunty Aur Babli , Tara Rum Pum and the forthcoming Laaga Chunari Mein Daag .
Rani has reduced her workload in the last one year. The 29-year-old actress is currently working on only three films.
The couple has never been spotted together. In fact, Aditya is known to be a recluse. He has given only one print interview in his life, and has never appeared on television.
Aditya is the mastermind behind transforming Yashraj studios from a modest film company into Bollywood’s biggest film conglomerate.
It seems like it’s wedding season for Bollywood.
We don’t know the exact date of Rani Mukherjee and Aditya Chopra marriage and wedding reception. But this surely will be the best wedding, comparable to Aishwarya Rai & Abhishek Bachchan’s.
Aditya Chopra was born in 1971 and Rani Mukherjee was born in 1978. Making them seven years apart.

Rani' home picture

Rani Mukherjee Spent Crorers For Home Interior
Actress Rani Mukerji is making sure that she leaves no stone unturned for her new bungalow at Juhu.
The actress is spending crores of rupees on the interiors of her bungalow, which has been designed by actor Hrithik Roshan’s wife, Suzanne Roshan.
Rani, who has been busy investing in property, has also bought another flat in Juhu.
Sources reveal that Rani has spent Rs 3 crores on just the designing of her drawing room.
Rani had purchased this bungalow last year and was not really satisfied by the interior decoration of her main room.
She was on the lookout for a perfect designer and a close friend suggested Suzanne’s name.
Suzanne has a professional interior designing degree from the US. They even did a lot of shopping abroad for objects in the drawing room.
The source continues, “The Black star wanted the drawing room to have a combined Western-Eastern contemporary feel to it.
She was so impressed by Suzanne’s designs that she told her not to worry about the expenditure. Extremely happy with the results, Rani has now handed over the work of the interiors of her Janki Kutir flat to Suzanne again.”
The spacious home is located in the upscale Juhu neighborhood in Mumbai and is named after her parents KrishnaRam. The house will also be home to Rani’s parents and her brother and sister in law. Happy house warming Rani!!!

Personal Quotes
The kiss with Kamal Haasan (in Hey! Ram) was mechanical. He was constantly checking the right angle. Where was the passion?
I don't party, I don't get drunk and I don't have affairs. So all my passion goes into my work.
Kamal Hassan re-invented the actress in me after the 'Hey Ram' experience.
On the State Dinner with President Pervez Musharraf: It was like a dream come true! To just be part of such an event made me feel that I've done something to achieve this. All the biggest dignitaries from both sides of the border were so cultured and down-to-earth. When I was invited, I was disbelieving and overjoyed. I'm really looking forward to going to Pakistan. Let's see where the invitation comes from. Maybe it will come directly from the Begum (President Musharraf's wife). They actually want me and Latabai (Lata Mangeshkar) to come to Pakistan!.
I'd rather have a room full of cuddly teddy bears than a diamond necklace in a safe deposit locker.
On her character in The Rising (2005): "See, my role started as a cameo. I was supposed to play the widow Jwala's character - yes, the one Aishwarya Rai was supposed to have done. Now Amisha Patel is doing that. When I read the script, I fell in love with the small role of the prostitute. There were two or three very good scenes. The script underwent a change, and I got more space than before. But it's still a cameo - nothing like what Smita Patil did with Ketan Mehta in Mirch Masala, though I wish had."
When Karan wanted my voice to be dubbed for 'Kuch Kuch Hota Hai', I really thought that it was bad and very husky and rough, but slowly I worked to improve my diction, and am now quite comfortable with it.
I am in the profession of acting and so to suit the character I sometimes have to indulge in kissing and provocative scenes. I have never felt comfortable shooting for kissing sequences. Although, kissing scenes like the ones in Yuva with Abhishek Bachchan and in Hum Tum with Saif were shot in an aesthetic manner. I am still pretty much uncomfortable performing such scenes.
You sign two films with a hero and it's said you're having a scene with him. Please, the only scenes I'm into are in front of the camera.
Why should I try to imitate Kajol? I am not a mimicry artist.
It's frustrating for the media to see me going about my work like Florence Nightingale - They'd like me to be Rangeeli Rani.
I'd never trade my dad's house, even for Buckingham Palace. I'm very sentimental about living with my parents.
I can never be rude to people who want photographs and autographs, but I don't like to be followed and stared at constantly.
My schedule for the day is somewhat fixed. I wake up early; go for my work-out. Play with the baby for a while, get ready and then I am off for my shoots. After work, I come home directly, play with her as long as she is awake. Then I have my dinner and hit the bed. That's it. My life revolves around my shooting schedules and Myeisha's daily routines.
I am here to act, entertain and make good films. I don't want to work hard for a film which does not even get released. I will cooperate with my director and help him make a good film. I get disappointed if my co-actors don't put in as much as I do. Today I am looking for banners and costars who have the same goal as me --- to work towards making a good film with dedication. I have made mistakes in my career, but that is just the learning process.
On Replacing Aishwarya Rai in Chalte Chalte (2003): As a matter of fact, and I have said this before, I was the original choice for this role. Shah Rukh spoke to me about the film during Asoka. I didn't have dates, so Ash replaced me. When she couldn't do the film for whatever reason, Shah Rukh asked me to do it. I love Aamir and Shah Rukh in a different way. When Shah Rukh asks, I can't say no.
Fifty thousand people on the beach watching 'Chalte Chalte' with me, then asking me questions about the songs and dances, the idiom and language of expression was incredible. I don't think I'll ever forget my experience in Casablanca.
To be honest, when the media gets very curious about my personal life, I get a little worried because too much curiosity is not good for anybody's health.
I have been linked with all my heroes from Vivek Oberoi to Govinda. I deal with the controversies because it's a part of my profession, and I am not having an affair with anyone. They try to link me up so that I come across as a little more interesting for the viewers. Linking me with other stars is OK, but not Vivek!
I think what is essential to be an actress is that you should be confident enough, you should have patience, and you should be ready to do a lot of hard work.
I think what is really required as a trick to survive in the film industry is your dedication, patience, lot of hard work and no manipulation.

Filmography:

While in school at the age of 14, Mukerji did a cameo role in her father's Bengali film Biyar Phool

(1992).

In 1994, Salim Akhtar, a family friend, offered her a film called Aa Gale Lag Jaa (1994)

but her father was against it as she was too young. Mukerji turned down the offer and Urmila

Matondkar was cast instead. Two years later, Salim Akhtar came up with another offer and insisted on her playing the

protagonist of Raja Ki Ayegi Baraat (1997). After a long discussion with her father, she agreed to

do the film. When the film was unsuccessful at the box office, Mukerji returned to college to

complete her education.
Mukerji had her first commercial success with Karan Johar's romance Kuch Kuch Hota Hai (1998), her biggest hit so far, and won a Filmfare Best Supporting Actress Award for her performance in the film. She later starred in many films, most of which fared below expectations. She re-invented her image with Saathiya (2002), which was commercially and critically successful.
In 2004, her performances in the hit Hum Tum and the critically acclaimed Yuva earned her the Best Actress and the Best Supporting Actress awards at the Filmfare, making her the first actress to win two major awards in the same year. She received unanimous praise for her role as a deaf-blind girl in the film Black (2005),
Mukerji comes from a film-oriented family of Bengali origin. Her father Ram Mukherjee is a retired director 'Leader' and 'Hum````` Hindustani' and one of the founders of Filmalaya Studios while her mother Krishna was a playback singer. Her brother Raja Mukherjee is a film producer, now turned director. Her maternal aunt, Debashree Roy, is a national award-winning Bengali film actress and her cousin, Kajol, is a popular Bollywood actress.
Mukerji is a trained Odissi dancer, and began learning the dance in the tenth grade. Mukerji studied at Maneckji Cooper High School in Juhu, and later enrolled at Mithibai College in Mumbai.
Acting career
Prior work and breakthrough, 1996-2002
Mukerji as Tina Malhotra in Kuch Kuch Hota Hai (1998). Pictured with Shahrukh Khan.
Mukerji returned to films in 1998. Her first release that year was Ghulam, opposite Aamir Khan; the film did well at the box office. Karan Johar's directorial debut, Kuch Kuch Hota Hai, co-starring Shahrukh Khan and Kajol, followed for her that year. The movie was a blockbuster, and she received her first Filmfare Award in the Best Supporting Actress category.
She followed her career by signing on several projects. Unfortunately, most of them did not do well at the box office. Although Badal was one of the highest grossing films of 2000, she still didn't succeed to establish her status in the industry at that point of time.
In 2001, Mukerji starred in Abbas Mustan's romantic drama Chori Chori Chupke Chupke, co-starring Salman Khan and Preity Zinta. The film was released after a one-year delay, and was one of the first Bollywood movies to handle the issue of surrogate childbirth. Mukerji's role was that of Priya Malhotra, a woman who is unable to conceive after a miscarriage, thus hires a surrogate mother. Rediff.com wrote, "Rani Mukherji is handicapped with a role that doesn't give her much scope besides weeping and sobbing. To her credit, she manages to hold her own even while playing a stereotypical sacrificing bhartiya nari."
In 2002, Mukerji played the lead role in Kunal Kohli's romance Mujhse Dosti Karoge!, co-starring alongside Hrithik Roshan and Kareena Kapoor. Although the movie did not do well in India, it generated great business overseas, and marked her entry into India's biggest production house: Yash Raj Films. Later that year, Mukerji starred in Shaad Ali's critically acclaimed Saathiya opposite Vivek Oberoi. The film was a moderate success and became one of the highest grossing movies of the year. Essaying the role of Suhani Sharma, a medical student who deals with the tensions and discontent of married life, she won a Filmfare Critics Award for Best Performance, and among several other nominations, received her first Best Actress nomination at the Filmfare. Manish Gajjar from BBC noted, "...Rani Mukerjee...plays the character of a middle class girl with great conviction."
Success, 2003-present
Mukerji's first 2003 release was Aziz Mirza's drama Chalte Chalte opposite Shahrukh Khan. The film saw her play a similar role to that of Saathiya, and she received her second nomination for Filmfare Best Actress Award. Among another three releases that year, Mukerji starred in Chori Chori, where she portrayed her first comic role. Although the film did not do well at the box office, Mukerji's comic timing was praised.
In 2004, her performance as a Bengali housewife in Mani Ratnam's Yuva won Mukerji her second Filmfare Best Supporting Actress Award. Though the film failed to do well, her performance was critically acclaimed with one critic writing, "the role demanded an actress of substance and Rani more than lives up to the expectations". She followed through by playing the leading role in the romantic comedy Hum Tum, which became one of the biggest hits of the year. The film, based on the 1989 film When Harry Met Sally..., was directed by Kunal Kohli. Mukerji's portrayal of Rhea Sharma, a woman of today's generation, won her several awards, including her first Filmfare Best Actress Award. BBC wrote about her performance:
Yash Chopra's love saga Veer-Zaara, co-starring alongside Shahrukh Khan and Preity Zinta. The film, which emerged as the top grossing movie of the year in India and abroad, tells the love story of an Indian officer, Veer Pratap Singh, played by Khan, and a Pakistani woman, Zaara, played by Zinta. Mukerji played the supporting role of Saamiya Siddiqui, a Pakistani lawyer who takes it upon herself to find the truth about Veer Pratap Singh.

Mukerji in her critically acclaimed performance as the blind, deaf and mute Michelle McNally in Black (2005), which earned her the Filmfare Best Actress Award for the second consecutive year.
In 2005, Mukerji starred in four high-profile films: Sanjay Leela Bhansali's Black, Shaad Ali's Bunty Aur Babli, Amol Palekar's Paheli and Ketan Mehta's The Rising. She was primarily noted for her performance in Black. When Bhansali first came to Mukerji with the offer, she turned it down and stated that she was not confident enough to play a deaf-blind girl. Once the director put faith in her, she agreed to do it and intensely studied sign language with professionals at the Helen Keller Institute in Mumbai. Mukerji received much critical acclaim for her performance and collected numerous trophies in the category of Best Actress at various award ceremonies. IndiaFM noted, "There's no denying that Rani delivers her best performance to date. With no dialogues in her lap, the actress conveys through expressions solely and what a terrific impact she makes. Here's a performance that should act as a reference guide for all aspiring actors". Her next release, Bunty Aur Babli, surfaced as one of the biggest hits of the year. The film, though successful at the box office, opened to mixed reviews, and so did Mukerji's performance, with one critic writing, "Rani has done a great job most of the time, though she does tend to go a little over the top in the crying scenes. Nevertheless, Mukerji received Best Actress nominations from the IIFA Awards and Filmfare Awards.
Mukerji was offered the lead role in Mira Nair's Hollywood film, The Namesake (2007) but owing to clashing dates with Kabhi Alvida Naa Kehna, she could not commit to the project. Her first release in 2006 was Karan Johar's drama Kabhi Alvida Naa Kehna, which consisted of a multi-starrer that included Amitabh Bachchan, Shahrukh Khan, Abhishek Bachchan, Preity Zinta and Kirron Kher. The film opened to mixed reviews but emerged as the most successful movie ever overseas. The film tells the story of two unhappily married couples in New York, which results in an extramarital affair. Mukerji played the role of Maya Talwar, a woman layered with self-doubt and question about the relationship between her and her husband, played by [Abhishek] Bachchan; her performance was well received. Rajeev Masand from CNN-IBN concluded, "Rani looks a million bucks and she dives under the skin of her character to make that part one that we will remember for a long time." She received several nominations for Best Actress, and won her third IIFA Best Actress Award for the third consecutive year. Mukerji's next release was B.R. Chopra's Baabul. The movie did not do well at the box office in India, though proved to be a hit overseas. Her role as a widow met with mixed reviews.
Mukerji's first 2007 release, Ta Ra Rum Pum, where she played a pianist turned housewife and a mother for the first time on celluloid, was a semi-hit. Her performance was generally well received, with one critic noting, "Rani enacts the role of the mother/wife proficiently." Her last two releases of the year, Pradeep Sarkar's drama Laaga Chunari Mein Daag and Sanjay Leela Bhansali's Saawariya, were critical and commercial failures in India.
